Hope over 'quick' bird flu test

UK scientists say they are developing a portable testing machine that will detect cases of bird flu in two hours.

Currently it takes about a week to identify the different flu strains because laboratory tests are needed.

Nottingham Trent University developers say their equipment is designed to be used at the scene of a suspected outbreak or taken to a patient.

It will enable them to identify strains lethal to humans far quicker, potentially saving lives, they say.

In Indonesia there has been an 81% death rate among people with the H5N1 strain, but survival chances increase greatly the earlier it is treated.

So far, tens of millions of birds have died or been slaughtered as a result of bird flu in Asia and beyond.

At the moment, the H5N1 strain, while highly infectious among poultry, is not easily passed to humans, and cannot be passed from human to human.

Mutation fear

Scientists fear that a strain of bird flu, possibly H5N1, could eventually mutate and cross the "species barrier".

It could then gain the ability to pass easily from person to person and perhaps lead to a dangerous global pandemic, they fear.

Once it does manage to infect a human, H5N1 is usually a killer.

In Indonesia, one of the worst-affected countries, 102 people, mostly those in close contact with infected poultry, have fallen ill, with four out of five dying.

One of the problems is that the early symptoms, such as cough and fever, are shared by other, common infections, delaying diagnosis.

Research published in The Lancet medical journal suggested that development of better diagnostic methods, and better ways of looking after patients could improve their chances.

If identified within a few days, H5N1 can be treated using anti-viral drugs and the chances of survival increase significantly.

UK experts have called for a national surveillance programme to detect H5N1 cases in Indonesians.

Saliva test

However, Dr Alan McNally, from Nottingham Trent University, believes his technology could make a difference.

All that is needed is a swab of saliva from a patient's mouth, and it can detect molecules specific to H5N1 or other bird flu strains.

Dr McNally said: "There's a large train of thought that one of the best ways of dealing with avian influenza is by detection and containment.

"The ability to detect and type the influenza virus immediately is essential in setting up controls as quickly as possible to minimise the spread of any potential pandemic virus."

The 2.3m project, which hopes to come up with a version of the machine that can fit within a briefcase, is being funded by the European Union.

Studio Execs Predict Fewer Films

Each of the major studios is considering ways of scaling back the number of films it produces each year, even as they cram a surfeit of movies into this year's summer release schedule, the Los Angeles Times observed today (Wednesday), citing several studio executives. Fox Filmed Entertainment Co-Chairman/CEO Tom Rothman told the newspaper that the surplus of films represents "one of the biggest issues facing Hollywood today." With so many films vying for attention, the studios have also been forced to increase their marketing and promotional costs. "In order to break through the clutter, we all feel the pressure to spend more in marketing," said Warner Bros. President Alan Horn. And Disney chief Robert Iger was quoted by the newspaper as saying, "Too many movies are being released into the marketplace. They can't all be good enough or marketed well enough to drive good returns." As a result, Time Warner chief Jeff Bewkes has told analysts that his company plans to cut its movie output in half, while at the same time hoping to move its profit up. Other studio execs also forecast dramatically reduced release schedules.

Mission Istaanbul Music Review

Apoorva Lakhia certainly likes to make movies with strong men in tow. Ek Ajnabee, Shootout At Lokhandwala and now Mission Istaanbul - 'macho' has been the keyword in each of the films made by the young director. If Shootout At Lokhandwala was his biggest film till date, Mission Istaanbul seems to be taking a step forward with global terrorism as the theme. Just like SAL, Apoorva ropes in multiple composers for Mission Istaanbul too with contribution coming from Anu Malik, Shamir Tandon, Chirantan Bhatt and Mika Singh. With expectations of a zany score with strong Western and Turkish flavor (due to the setting of the film), one plays on the soundtrack of Mission Istaanbul.

Sharon Stone - Stones Dior Campaign Axed In China

LATEST: SHARON STONE has suffered another blow after her comments following China's recent earthquake - French fashion house CHRISTIAN DIOR has axed her promotional posters in the country.

The actress has come under attack from officials in China for suggesting the country's recent earthquake was caused by "karma" - and a leading cinema chain has already threatened to ban her films.

But now bosses at Christian Dior have banned adverts featuring the star in China.

A spokesman at the company's Shanghai headquarters said, "We don't agree with her hasty, unreflecting remarks and we deeply regret them.

"Dior was one of the first international brands to enter China and has won the affection and respect of the consuming public. We absolutely do not support any remark that hurts the Chinese people's feelings."

Meanwhile, Stone herself has apologised for the interview.

She said in a statement: "Due to my inappropriate words and acts during the interview, I feel deeply sorry and sad about hurting Chinese people.

"I am willing to take part in the relief work of China's earthquake, and wholly devote myself to helping affected Chinese people."

The outspoken actress was talking to a Chinese media outlet on Thursday (26May08) when she linked the recent disaster, which left more than 67,000 people dead, to China's recent treatment of Tibetans.

Aclu Backs Fired Tv Host

The American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts has criticized the decision by
Comcast to fire veteran journalist Barry Nolan for protesting against the decision
by the Boston chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences to
award a special local Emmy to Fox News commentator Bill O'Reilly. The ACLU did not
indicate whether it was considering filing a lawsuit against the cable operator --
the nation's largest -- on behalf of Nolan. In a statement released Thursday, the
ACLU said that Nolan's firing was "most unfortunate, as it suggests that independent
journalism is not valued -- or perhaps even understood -- at Comcast." At the same
time the ACLU fired its own salvo at O'Reilly, saying in its statement that his "struggles
with fact-based journalism have been well documented by numerous independent sources,
making Mr. Nolan's firing all the more disturbing." Earlier this week Nolan observed
that he had merely passed out a leaflet containing O'Reilly's own words and quotes
from a sexual harassment lawsuit that O'Reilly settled out of court. "I got fired from
my job on a news and information network for reporting demonstrably true things in
a room full of news people." Neither CN8, the Cox-owned channel that fired Nolan,
nor O'Reilly has commented on Nolan's firing.

Fox To Halve Commercials For New Shows

Fox Broadcasting plans to draw viewers to its new dramas Fringe and Dollhouse
by drastically cutting the number of commercials and promos in them to half the usual
number. Today's (Friday) Hollywood Reporter quoted Fox Entertainment Chair
man Peter Liguori as saying that by doing so, "we're going to have ... less reason
for viewers to use the remote. ... It's a simple concept and potentially revolutionary.
... We're going to redefine the viewing experience."

Born in 1974, Aubrey Haynie has superfluous no time in establishing himself as one of the most talented fiddle and mandolin players in contemporary country music. Haynie has been one of the well-nigh sought after session players in Nashville, having appeared on releases by George Jones, Porter Wagoner, Trisha Yearwood, and Bryan White among others, and with tours in the bands of Aaron Tippin and Clint Black padding his resumé, as well. Comfortable in a kind of traditional musical genres, from bluegrass and nation to more than swing and jazz-oriented styles, Haynie has raddled comparisons to swing and bluegrass Country twiddler Chubby Wise, world Health Organization served as something of a wise man to Haynie in his youth, and accolades from Ricky Skaggs, world Health Organization contributed vocals on Haynie's debut. 1997's Doin' My Time -- an excellent mix of traditionals, covers, and original instrumentals interracial with the occasional vocal lead -- was well-received in the bluegrass residential district and netted Haynie a nomination from the International Bluegrass Music Association for Instrumental Album of the Year. The similarly impressive A Man Must Carry On followed in the spring of 2000 and only added to Haynie's ontogeny report.
